It is accepted worldwide that water is one of the most important elements in both human and animal life. Water makes up the majority of an animals’ body throughout growth and development. Animals gain water from the food they eat, from oxidation of fats and proteins in the body, and from the action of drinking water from a source such as a river or lake. Properties of water may help to normalise bodily functions such as regulation of body temperature, body weight, and also becomes a factor in determining health (losing one tenth of the body’s water results in death, for example).

Animals do not have the plethora of benefits that humans have when it comes to water. For example, humans usually have an abundance source of water to go to at all times. Animals, however, do not experience this luxury. Animals may need to vary their amount of water intake for various reasons; for example, pregnant animals will require a higher amount of water intake to support the bodily functions while carrying offspring. Also, varying temperatures throughout the environment may also change the amount of water intake needed for a certain animal. In hotter environmental conditions, water loss is imminent, and therefore the demand for water is increased.

Certain animals have adapted to meet the demands for water. For example, camels have numerous physiological adaptations that ensure survival without water. Camels are able to endure severe changes in body temperature, as well as weight loss (a camel may lose up to 40 pounds without any severe side effects) which aid in conservation of water. Additionally, camels are able to survive for up to 40 days without water, provided they consume enough green vegetation to get the moisture they need.  Amphibians, however, such as frogs and toads are not able to survive for more than a couple of days without a constant source of water.

As well as environmental factors, pollution also plays an important role in the survival of animals. If water is contaminated due to chemicals from human waste or sewage leaks, animals may die, not because a lack of water, but due to poisoning from chemicals in the water source. It is vital that animals have a fresh source of water in order to thrive in their environment; otherwise it is possible that certain species may die out significantly. This idea highlights how water plays and imperative role across the broad spectrum of nature.

If you pets becomes unwell due to lack of water this can lead to long term problems with your pets health. You might want to consider pet insurance to cover any such big vets bills.
