Often, these car washes are coin operated, and come equipped with certain supplies that will clean the car, such as scrubbing brushes and high-pressure hoses. Once coins or tokens have been inserted, the customer is able to choose from a multitude of options for their wash, such as tyre cleaning, waxing, rinsing or a scrub.
A carwash may also be a way to raise money for a certain event or charity. Oftentimes, schools or other organisations offer car washes in order to raise money. In order to attract customers, an individual involved in the organisation often advertises the event by standing on roadsides, holding up posters or signs that give information regarding the car wash. Often, a group of individuals then clean the cars in order to receive a small donation from the customer.
Automatic car washes are a popular way to ensure that the car is cleaned adequately. These carwashes first appeared in the 1940s, and operate using a conveyer belt system to guide the car through a tunnel. The car encounters a series of cleaning mechanisms, such as chemical rinses, degreases, wraparounds (which simply rub the car to clean it), and high pressure washes. The automatic car wash is beneficial as it does not require the owner to exert any effort into cleaning their car, and also is a relatively cheap way to maintain the appearance of one’s car.
