Electricity is the driving force behind our household appliances. Without it we’d quite literally be plunged into darkness. It is an absolute necessity in today’s society, and thankfully the electricity services in the United Kingdom are well developed, and suit our needs adequately.
Electricity is created using a number of methods, and comes from a variety of sources. The most common way of producing electricity is to use a turbine. This can come in the form of a wind turbine, or the mechanical parts that are made to move inside a power plant. Both types of electricity generator work in a similar way but using different methods of power. A wind turbine relies on the wind as its name suggests. The wind causes the blades of the turbine to move, and this in turn creates electricity by moving a conductor within a magnetic field. A power station works in a similar fashion, but the power is produced by burning fossil fuels or by harnessing nuclear power.
The electricity is created in a certain location, and then distributed around the country to houses or other buildings for example. Many people are concerned about the way electricity is produced. We rely hugely upon fossil fuels, which will soon be gone. A lot of money and research is being put into ways of creating electricity using renewable sources, and ways of making existing alternatives more efficient. It is hoped that in the future we can generate electricity from plants that are self sufficient, and don’t drain our plant’s resources.
The question ‘Who invented the light bulb’ is a subject of much debate, but whoever it was marked the beginning of electricity use in the home. After this invention, huge amounts of money went into making electricity available to the majority of homeowners in the United States. This paved the way for the invention of other domestic appliances that we rely heavily upon today. Electricity is a huge part of all of our lives.
There are four companies in the United Kingdom that deal with electricity distribution. The National Grid is the company that supplies electricity to homes in England and Wales. Two companies, Energywatch and OFGEM, work to deal with customer complaints and attempt to regulate the costs of gas and electricity. The system is very efficient, and it allows users to get the most out of their provider, and allows them to interact and have their voices heard.
