Water filters are a profitable choice when it comes to ensuring that drinking water is clean and safe for drinking. Water filters work by trapping dirt and impure particles in the water that is so often used for drinking or bathing. Using filters may assist in preventing a myriad of health issues such as bacterial or chemical infections due to consumption of contaminated water. The utilisation of water filters has been in practise since as early as 4000 B.C. This method was used not necessarily for cleansing water of any bacteria or infectious molecules, but rather to remove dirt and cloudiness from the water source. Today however, the filtration of water has become an issue of ensuring the safety of water that is consumed.
There are many methods available that are used to filter water. Many filters use activated charcoal, which when treated with chemicals or heat, becomes highly absorptive. The porous nature of charcoal traps impurities in water, while allowing the cleansed water to pass through to taps or showerheads. Another method used to purify water is reverse osmosis. Water is transported through a thin, semi-permeable membrane, which will trap any large molecules and prevent them from being consumed. Any smaller molecules still mixed with the water will be exposed to an activated charcoal filtration system, thus cleansing the water almost completely of any impurities.
Water distillation is also an effective process in ensuring that water is safe for consumption. In order to cleanse and purify water, the dirty water is first heated until it reaches a boiling point and vaporises. As the water becomes steam, the impure substances will remain in a solid state in the boiler. The steam is then cooled and condensed until it returns to its liquid state. The result is clean, safe drinking water.
The use of water filters produces better tasting and better smelling water, and installation is relatively cheap, ranging from 70 to 300 pounds. Filters are beneficial as they remove multiple impurities from drinking water, such as lead and chlorine which are harmful to the body when consumed. Filtering water helps to provide significantly healthier sources of water, boosting the body’s immune system and helping to defend against the infection of harmful toxins. Installing a water filter also saves money. Bottled water, although healthy, is costly, whereas using a filter on a tap for drinking water is a quick, cheap and easy way to maintain a healthy intake of water.
