Water supplies are the systems that exist to provide water for drinking and other purposes. They exist throughout the world, though are less common in developing countries. It is up to developed countries to invest in water supplies for those who are less fortunate, to give them access to clean and safe drinking water.

It may come as a surprise, but only just over half of the world’s population have water systems installed in their homes that provide them with safe water. Less than a quarter of the population have access to taps or water pumps that supply clean water, but the rest rely upon unsafe water supplies such as rivers or wells. This is a shocking amount of people who are potentially put at huge risk every time they have a drink of water.

The water from these locations can be full of harmful bacteria, and can easily cause disease or even death. The water that is distributed through water systems is sourced from a variety of locations. It can be taken from lakes, reservoirs or can even be recycled water from sewage for example. We are lucky that in the United Kingdom our water undergoes rigorous treatment procedures to remove any impurities and ensure that it is safe. Many countries have water supplies that aren’t as efficient and can still provide unsafe water. These places often don’t have the same treatment facilities as we do.

In today’s society, many people are a lot more environmentally aware than they were. People are conscious that many resources aren’t renewable, and that we must all contribute towards saving the resources that we have. There are many ways for people to save water, simply by changing a few aspects of their every day lives. It is important to consider these methods of saving water, as it can both lower costs of living and help conserve our planet for future generations.

Our water supply is very advanced. In the United Kingdom many different water companies that operate in certain regions of the country control it. They are all regulated by OFWAT, the Water Services Regulation Authority, to ensure that customers pay fair rates, and that clean water is availably to all those living in the country. We are fortunate that we have such a well-regulated water supply, and it is important to consider those who are less fortunate and have to rely on water supplies that are potentially dangerous.
